Lite information om San Francisco San Francisco in northern California is the chiefport of the United States. A mile wide channel, called Golden Gate, leads from the sea into San Francisco bay. The Golden Gate bridge is one of San Franciscos many bridges and it is a very famous suspension bridge over the Golden Gate. It is 2 725 metres long and is 67 metres above the waterline. The bridge hangs down from cables. There are several fine parks in San Francisco and one of them, the Golden Gate Park, goes from the middle of the city to the Pacific coast. There are a lot of chinese people who came to San Francisco to work and live a peaceful life. They have built a town of their own in the heart of the city and it is called, Chinatown. It is a very famous part of San Francisco, with streets full of chinese restaurants and shops. A fort and a missionary centre were established on the peninsula by the spaniards in the 18th century. The settlement was then called Yerba Buena. It was claimed by the United States in 1848 and its name was changed to San Francisco. San Francisco is very subjected to all earthquakes who are ravage in this side of earth. In 1906 San Francisco had a big earthquake and in the first day, 514 city blocks had gone, 28 188 buildings, including the homes of 250 000. Libraries, theaters, restaurants, courts, jails, the financial district, South of market, the fabulous Palace - all gone. About 2 500 had died. Now it was a city of refugees. More than 100 000 had fled, and 250 000 remained, encamped in parks and fields. In three years after the earthquake, 20 000 buildings went up, all bigger and stronger than the 28 000 that had burned. When the Richter scale was devised later, experts rated the quake at a tremendously potent 8.3. San Francisco October 17, 1989 there was a new big earthquake. In 15 interminable seconds, an estimated 100 people had been killed and 3 000 injured, making the quake the third most lethal in U.S history. It was measured at 6.9 on the Richter scale.
